Why I Give: Helping Perpetuate Christian Science
Even while Sharon Perlis (C’66) was building up and maintaining a well-respected law practice and serving on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards, Principia was never far from her thought. Soon after she had established her business in her hometown of New Orleans, she became a regular contributor to Principia and made a few short visits for special events at the College. Then, in the fall of 2005, Sharon unexpectedly found herself back on campus for several weeks—waiting out the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Of course, keeping her business going from a distance and her thought in the right place about what was happening back home was challenging. But being at the College again “was a wonderful opportunity to meet students, to be at the heart of things and feel the pulse of what was going on at Prin,” remembers Sharon. “I felt like a kid there. It was such a renewal!” She returned to New Orleans in October, picking up her many community and business commitments amid the recovery efforts.
The very next year, Sharon was invited back to campus to receive the 2006 David K. Andrews Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing her vast contributions to her community and her pioneering role as a female attorney and business leader. When Sharon entered Tulane University Law School shortly after graduating from Principia, she was one of only three women in a class of 120! Her professional journey has, indeed, been groundbreaking, and she believes her liberal arts education prepared her to face the challenges along the way. “Principia made me multidimensional, and I’m much richer for it,” she notes.
“I love Principia, I cherish my years there,” Sharon says. Even more, she cherishes “the perpetuation of pure Christian Science through the education of young people.” That’s what motivates her to give.
Given Sharon’s considerable work on behalf of nonprofits in her hometown, her choice to support Principia is especially meaningful. Asked why she makes this choice, Sharon responds immediately and enthusiastically: “Principia’s vision and the unique education students receive at all grade levels—that’s priceless!”
